A Year of Triumph: Victor Wembanyama's Remarkable Comeback in Austin!
It’s a story of resilience that basketball fans won't soon forget. Just a little over a year ago, the promising career of San Antonio Spurs' star center, Victor Wembanyama, was thrown into jeopardy. On February 20, 2025, a day that likely felt like a nightmare for any young athlete, Victor received the devastating news: "Your season is done."
At the tender age of 21, this international sensation, already a recognizable face in professional basketball, was diagnosed with a rare blood clot in his right shoulder. This unfortunate discovery came after his first NBA All-Star appearance, during a medical evaluation upon his return to San Antonio. The announcement of his season-ending injury arrived mere hours before the Spurs were scheduled to play their first of two games at Austin's Moody Center during the 2025 season.
This was a heartbreaking conclusion to what had been a promising second season for the prodigious talent. Despite his season being cut short to just 46 games, Wembanyama was a beacon of light for the San Antonio squad, which, at the time of his injury, was struggling and ranked 12th in the Western Conference.
Victor himself reflected on that difficult period, sharing, "I remember the All-Star Game last year was the worst I had ever felt on a basketball court in my life. I had 5% maybe, of blood flow in my right arm… obviously I’m feeling much better, but honestly, I think it doesn’t really compare to last year. I think my diagnosis explained a lot of the way I was feeling back then."
It was undoubtedly a challenging road back for San Antonio's franchise player. Yet, fast forward just over a calendar year, and Wembanyama and the Spurs have transformed into a team that is almost unrecognizable from their last visit to Austin.
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson praised Wembanyama's impact, stating, "He’s directly affecting the game or indirectly with his gravity. It sets the table for everybody else. And it can be hard at times… I still can’t imagine a 22-year-old with so many gifts and talents and weapons to just trust that being sharp fundamentally still leads to greatness."
And on the court during the second and final game at the Moody Center, Wembanyama was nothing short of spectacular. He spearheaded a dominant fourth-quarter performance, effectively sealing the victory against the Sacramento Kings. His impressive stat line for the game included 28 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, and four blocks, leading the Spurs to a decisive 139-122 win over Sacramento – a performance that seemed almost unimaginable around this time last year.
Wembanyama was subbed out with just over five minutes remaining and a commanding 26-point lead, the game well in hand for the Spurs. The Moody Center crowd rose to their feet, offering a standing ovation to the superstar as he headed to the bench for a well-deserved rest.
"I think that was (an) above average night for us and for me, but it wasn’t amazing either," Wembanyama humbly commented. "My goal is to make that the standard."
Currently, the Spurs are enjoying a significant seven-game lead for the second seed in the Western Conference and are only two and a half games behind the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder for the top spot.
Guard Stephon Castle highlighted Wembanyama's competitive spirit: "He doesn’t care whether we’re playing pickup, one on one, he’s gonna play hard to win."
Although the Spurs are officially San Antonio's team, proudly wearing their "City Edition" jerseys with "San Antonio" emblazoned across the front for both games, the Austin crowd at the Moody Center provided a much-needed home-like atmosphere during their annual "Rodeo Roadtrip." This demanding stretch of road games occurs mid-season, coinciding with the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, which requires the team to play away from their usual home at the Frost Bank Center.
"It’s great to be close to home. It’s great to have our fans here," Wembanyama expressed. "It’s a nice little extension of the break, because we know we’re going to be out of there (on the road) for the next few weeks."
While the Spurs will face a less familiar crowd for the remainder of February until their return home in early March, San Antonio has certainly kicked off their annual road trip with impressive momentum, achieving a 4-0 record and sweeping their Moody Center games for the first time in franchise history.
