A stunning upset unfolded at the Qatar Open as world number 57, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, defeated Coco Gauff, the reigning French Open champion and world number 5, in straight sets. The match, which lasted just over an hour and a half, saw Gauff succumb to a 6-4, 6-2 defeat in the second round.
Gauff's fatigue was evident after a grueling doubles match the previous day, where she and her partner, Victoria Mboko, fell in a close 5-7, 6-7 encounter. Despite putting up a stronger fight in the first set, Gauff was broken three times in the second, ultimately succumbing to the impressive play of Cocciaretto.
But here's where it gets controversial: Cocciaretto, a lucky loser in the tournament, had her mind set elsewhere. With the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics taking place in her home country, her focus was divided. In her post-match interview, she admitted, "This week is a little different for us in Italy. I'm more focused on the Winter Olympics, cheering for our athletes. Maybe that's why I played better!"
Cocciaretto has been supporting her friend, Sofia Goggia, who won bronze in the women's downhill skiing event. She even revealed, "We're in contact, always sending messages and FaceTiming. I love their approach to sport - fearless and focused. If I have kids, I'll put them in skiing!"
And this is the part most people miss: Gauff now has a chance to redeem herself at the Dubai Tennis Championships in just a few days. Will she rise to the challenge, or will the fatigue and mental distractions prove too much? Only time will tell.
In other news, world number 2, Iga Swiatek, cruised into the round of 16 with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win over Janice Tjen. Swiatek, the top seed, now faces Daria Kasatkina, and despite leading the head-to-head 6-1, she's not taking the match lightly.
"Every match is a different story," Swiatek said. "I try not to focus on past results. I'm ready for the challenge and won't be thinking about previous meetings."
Additionally, Australian Open champion, Elena Rybakina, continued her winning streak, defeating Wang Xinyu. Rybakina, who claimed her second Grand Slam title just ten days ago, extended her winning run to eight matches and celebrated her 400th career match-win.
"It's a nice statistic, a lot of matches played," Rybakina said. "I'm just happy to be playing and enjoying it."
So, who will emerge victorious in these thrilling tournaments? Will Gauff bounce back, or will the young Italian continue her impressive run? And can Swiatek and Rybakina maintain their dominant forms? Tune in to Sky Sports or stream with NOW to find out!
