A Tale of Two Marquezes: Ducati's Bagnaia Faces a Sprint Challenge
In a highly anticipated MotoGP test at Sepang, Francesco Bagnaia, the star rider for Ducati, showcased his potential but fell short of perfection in a Sprint simulation. While he outpaced his teammate and reigning champion, Marc Marquez, another GP26 rider, Alex Marquez of Gresini, stole the show with a lightning-fast Sprint run, finishing 1.385 seconds ahead of Bagnaia.
But here's where it gets controversial... Bagnaia, in a candid admission, revealed the area where he lost ground. "The Sprint sim went well, but I struggled to maintain consistency with the front tire in the last three laps. We're working on it, and I'm determined to improve." He added, "I'm happy with our overall test performance, but the time attack could've been better."
And this is the part most people miss... Bagnaia deliberately avoided the 'magic' lap chase, a strategy he believes is not always the best approach. "I realized it's not about being the fastest in tests; it's about consistency. I missed a good lap time, but we have Thailand to work on it."
"Let's wait and see in Thailand," Bagnaia said, referring to the final test in Buriram. After a disappointing 2025 season, he's reserving judgment until then. "The Thailand test will be crucial. I'm feeling better with the '26 spec bike, and we'll confirm the swingarm and fairing there."
The Buriram test, scheduled for February 21-22, will be a true indicator of Bagnaia's progress. With Peter, a 20-year veteran of the paddock, witnessing the rise and fall of legends like Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez's injury struggles, the stage is set for an exciting MotoGP season opener in Thailand.
